Use one Breville cleaning tablet per backflush session, typically every 2–4 weeks. Here's the step-by-step routine, common mistakes, and how to time it right.
Quick answer
Use one Breville cleaning tablet per backflush session. Run that session every 2–4 weeks if you pull shots daily, or after roughly 30–50 shots. The 8-tablet pack covers about two to four months of regular home use.
What the tablet actually cleans
A cleaning tablet targets the coffee oils and residue left in the shower screen and filters, not the boiler or steam wand. That is why tablet cleaning is a backflush job, separate from descaling. Descaling removes mineral scale with a liquid descaler; tablets remove coffee oil. Skipping one does not replace the other.
How often to backflush with a tablet
For daily home use, one tablet every two to four weeks keeps oils from building up. If you pull several shots a day, move to the two-week end. If you use the machine a few times a week, monthly is reasonable. A simple checkpoint: if the shower screen looks dull or oily, or the last shot tastes flat, clean sooner rather than waiting for the calendar.
Tablet frequency vs. descaling frequency
Keep the two routines on separate schedules. Backflush with a tablet every 2–4 weeks, and descale according to your water hardness and machine prompts. Do not crush a tablet into the water tank or run it through the steam wand; it is formulated for the brew path, not the boiler.
Step-by-step tablet backflush routine
- 1. Empty the portafilter and insert the blind basket: Remove any coffee and fit the rubber blind basket (or backflush disc) into the portafilter, then lock it into the group head. Checkpoint: the portafilter should seat fully; if it feels tight, remove and reseat it rather than forcing it.
- 2. Drop in one tablet: Place a single Breville cleaning tablet into the blind basket. Do not stack two tablets; one is enough for a home backflush. Common mistake: using a tablet in a basket without a blind disc, which lets the tablet dissolve into your cup instead of cleaning the brew path.
- 3. Run the backflush cycle: Start the machine's cleaning or backflush program if it has one, or run the pump in short bursts according to your model's manual. Let the tablet dissolve and work through the shower screen and filters. Checkpoint: follow your specific model's manual for cycle length; do not improvise a long continuous run.
- 4. Rinse with clean water: Remove the blind basket and run a shot of clean water through the group head to flush out dissolved tablet residue. Common mistake: skipping the rinse, which can leave a faint cleaning taste in the next shot.
- 5. Pull a test shot and log the date: Pull a throwaway shot to confirm the taste is clean, then note the date so your next tablet lands in two to four weeks. If the test shot still tastes off, repeat the backflush once with a fresh tablet before assuming the machine needs service.
